Hi guys, I am back again with my new tutorial. I have always wanted a vertical garden in my house but the thought of pests/insects freaks me out. While I was researching on wedding backdrops for photobooth, I came across floral walls, either made of paper flowers or artificial flowers. I would like to try paper flower wall decor one day too. Paper flower is too fragile and not a good idea for use as a home decor. Thus, I choose to use artificial roses for my new home. Thankfully, my husband is supportive of this idea and he is not a fan of marvel heroes or transformers. Can you imagine how to blend these 2 themes that totally clash each other?

It is important to choose a theme and follow through when you are decorating your home. Always wait till your home design is out before you start to buy your furniture or decorative items. OK enough tips on home decoration, let’s start on our tutorial.

Materials

1-materials for flower floral wall

  1. Artificial flowers (buy 3 different colours that complements each other)
  2. Wire mesh with holes approx. 1″ x 1″ (11″ x 14″ mesh grid x 8pcs for a 1mtr x 2mtr wall) (I got mine from Daiso Japan but I found similar one on Taobao)
  3. Wire cutter
  4. Garden wire (to secure the flowers to the wire mesh)
  5. Optional: Green masking tape (to stick back any loose roses that fall out of the stalk)

Instructions

Step 1

3- floral wall decorative flowers

Cut out the stalks from the flower bunch using the wire cutter.

Step 2

4- floral wall roses

Select 3 shades of roses or any other flowers which you like. It is better to choose a variation of big and small flowers. The bunch I bought consists of some small complimenting flowers. I prefer to use 3 different shades of roses instead of a single colour because variation creates more depth to the feature wall and looks more realistic.

Step 3

5-how to mount rose on flower wall

Mount the flowers starting from the first grid. Take the first stalk of rose, insert into row 1 column 1 , then come out from row 2 column 1.

Step 4

6-mounting different colour roses

Always alternate the size of flower and colour. I start off with 1 big pink rose, 1 small pink flower bunch, 1 big white rose, 1 small white flower bunch, then followed by champagne colour then back to pink again. You can skip 1 grid after every 2 grids of flowers if you are using big flowers. In this way, you can save the amount of flowers used. Cramping too many flowers will cause the flower to drop off easily too.

Step 5

7-how to mount floral wall

When you work on the second row, you can choose to start from row 3 of the grid. This is to prevent cramping the flowers. As long as you do not see visible space gap in between, it is fine. Try not to overlap the colours, if the row above is pink, you should use white or champagne directly underneath. This is to create variation and depth. Else your floral wall will appear patchy.

Step 6

8-work on the bottom row

After you have worked about 3 rows, you should reach the middle. It is time to turn the grid around and work from the bottom. If you choose to continue working all the way to the bottom, your flowers will all appear to face upwards and you will have long protruding stalks at the bottom of the grid, which will be a hazard and spoils your wall decoration. Thus, turning the grid around, you can hide all the stalk wires inside the wire mesh.

Step 7

9-work on sides of floral wall

After you are done 2 rows from the bottom, lay the mesh on the ground or table. Start working on the sides. When you are working on the sides, you can insert the stalk diagonally like the pink arrow in the picture. Now we are trying to fill up the empty spaces with flowers, it gets tougher to insert the flowers because you can’t see the grid as you reach the centre. You can try to flip to the back to adjust the stalk of the flower.

Step 8

11- completed floral grid for flower wall

This is how a completed grid will look like after you have inserted all the flowers. This is not the end yet. You still need to secure the stalks at the back.

Step 9

10- fastening the wire

Flip the grid to the back. Secure all the stalks you can see with garden wire.

Step 10

11- mounting the floral wall

Lastly, you can mount the floral panels like how you would mount a painting. Drill 2 screws into the wall and you can mount your flower grid. If you can’t drill like me, get professional help from your carpenter. You will need to mount 1 panel at a time as the size of the panel tends to vary a bit with the different flowers on it.

  • This is beautiful! How would I make this mobile? I would need to be able to transport this to a venue. I like the idea of the smaller mesh squares, that would definitely be easy to transport. But I would need to hang them on something once at the venue. I would need to build a stand, probably out of 2x4s, with slate about the same width as the wire mesh to allow me to hang these. Do you have any ideas?

  • Hi Nikki, you can try using velcro or S hooks to secure the mesh squares together. I have a friend who has done it using velcro and he build a stand using pvc pipes. You may want to try that as it is very portable and light weight. =)

  • This is amazing! Where did you purchase your flowers? I’ve found Hobby Lobby and Michaels pretty cost prohibitive for making a sizable wall. Thanks!

  • Hi Roselle,

This looks amazing! I am thinking of doing for events also. I found a large wire panel 1.8m x 1.2m. Could I do it on a larger one instead? Also, what sizes are your flowers? What diameter?

  • Hi Tegan, yes you could do on large panel as well. It should work the same. If your wire panel is coiled up, I am not sure if the panel will lie flat or it will curl up. You might consider securing the perimeter to something secure. My roses are approximately 4inch or 10cm in diameter each. I did not really count the number of flowers but I use approximately 72 bunches (1 bunch has about 6 roses and some small flowers) Hope you find this useful. =)

  • this tutorial was so helpful. i made a similar “wall” but with fake grass pannels so i needed less flowers (aka less money). haven’t mounted it yet but happy already

  • This is amazing and is exactly what I was looking for but didn’t know how it was done. Am I able to ur grid wall panels?

  • Hermoso gracias. Justamente necesitaba esto para un evento de cumpleaños que voy a decorar en Diciembre, cuando lo tenga terminado te lo compartiré. Muchas Gracias.

  • hi Natalie, actually i bought command hooks initially but the panel is rather heavy and the command hooks seems to peel off my wall paint easily. So eventually I decided to mount by drilling nails on the wall instead.

  • Ronelle, this is so beautiful…We have a Daiso here in Plano, TX but could not find the wire mesh, is it called something else?

  • Hi Tola, I have not seen the wire mesh in the Daiso here recently either. I am not sure if they will restock. Alternatively, you can use the bbq mesh, it should work the same way. =)

  • I love your flower wall and I’ve been searching for a good tutorial so thank you so much!! I do have a question if you wanted to make a similar wall just not permanent for like a photo backdrop can you use real flowers with your same technique?

  • Thank you so much for this. I’m so excited to try this out. Been wanting a flower wall for my studio but the prices people that make them have been giving me is back breaking. Now to hunt for the materials.

  • Hi Angie, yes you may use real flowers but do note that real flowers tend to wither. Thus, I will suggest you to wrap the stalk with cotton wool soaked with water and cover up with aluminium foil, just like how the florist does it. If you have the strong photography backdrop stand, you can secure these panels onto the stand using cable ties or velcro instead. =)

  • Hi Ronelle,

This tutorial is amazing and just what I was looking for! How many total grids did you use to make the complete wall?

  • Hi Melissa, I have used a total of 8 panels for my wall. You can estimate with an allowance of 4inch (10cm ) around each panel as the flowers pops out. It also depends on the size of the flower you are using, as my roses are quite big, thus it tends to pop out around 4inch around the panel. =)
