Hello everyone, this is part 2 of my Fabric Flower Pen Tutorial. After learning how to make the flower core in part 1 of the tutorial, it is time to learn how to make the petals. I like to mix different fabric prints in my flower as it really brightens up my day just looking at them. Personally, I would prefer to use contrasting colours for the core and the petals. You can also opt for same colour tone with different prints. Try to experiment out with different permutations to get interesting results. ^^
Let’s start!
Materials needed
- Cloth
- Button (made in part 1 of tutorial)
- Thread
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Felt (any colour)
- Masking tape (for petal size measurement)
- Fabric chalk (missed out in the picture)
Instructions
Step 1
Cut the fabric into 5 squares, using the masking tape for size measurement. Trace the outline of the masking tape using fabric chalk.
Step 2
Pin the 5 squares together. Then cut out the circle marking. If you want the exact size of the circle, it is about 95mm/9.5cm in diameter.
Step 3
Fold the circle into half. Then make a running stitch around the edge. Continue for all the 5 petals.
Step 4
Sew the last petal to the first petal.
Step 5
Cut the felt into a circle that is slightly bigger than the button. About 30mm diameter, do not have to be very exact. Just make sure the felt it more than enough to cover the centre of the hole in the flower.
Step 6
Turn the flower to the back. Apply hot glue on the inner circle of the flower as highlighted above.
Step 7
Stick the felt over the area you have applied glue.
Step 8
Apply hot glue behind the fabric button. I did not apply glue on the inner side of the petals this time round because I am afraid the glue can be seen protruding out. But you can apply glue in the centre, on the felt portion.
Step 9
Stick the button in the middle of the petals and you are done!
